Last Minute Christmas Shopping Guide

It's been a while since I last posted due to university deadlines and then being struck down with a horrible cold.  Being so close to Christmas, I decided to lie low until I felt better.  Speaking of Christmas, there's only six shopping days left, which may leave some of us in a panic.  If you're working, the easiest option is to do what you can online on your lunch break, but with each online retailers having different delivery deadlines, it can all get a bit confusing.  I've compiled a list of all the popular online retailers and when their last shipping dates (United Kingdom only) before Christmas are, as well as including any discounts that the brand are dishing out.

Top 3 Foundations for Pale Skin

For us fair girls, finding a foundation that blends seamlessly into our skin tone has become increasingly difficult.  Have no fear Snow White's, I've found three bases that might just be what you're looking for. 

1. Liz Earle Signature Foundation* in #01 Porcelain; £21 - This is a foundation I've recently talked about in a lot of depth (review here), even going as far as calling it my HG foundation.  The colour is a fantastic match for my skin tone, and blends in without leaving a noticeable line around my face.  It's a medium, natural coverage, which gives a fresh, dewy finish when used over a moisturiser, or a matte finish if you use a primer such as Benefit's The POREfessional.  It has good staying power, only needing a touch up if you've got an oilier skin. The only negative is that you only get 25ml, whereas a standard foundation bottle is 30ml.  

2.  No7 Essentially Natural Foundation in Calico; £9.95 - When No7 launched their Match Made service at the end of August (read more here), I couldn't wait to try it out and see if they would have a shade for me, or if my reading would come back "too pale".  Fortunately, I was matched up to Calico and after having it applied to my skin by the make up artist, I fell in love.  Essentially Natural is a light to medium coverage foundation and leaves a dewy finish.  It lasts a reasonable amount of time on the skin, only needing touching up with powder after 4-5 hours of wear.  You get 40ml of product, making this a more affordable product as you get more for your money.  

3. Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation* in #51; £10.99 - This is the most "orange" of the foundation choices, but still a nice choice if you blend it right.  It's said to be the high street dupe for Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua as it's a light to medium coverage which doesn't feel heavy on the skin. Again it leaves a dewy finish, but can be mattified with powder, which helps keep the product in place for longer too.  You get 30ml which is a standard amount for base products.  You can often find this product for around £7.99 when it's on offer in Boots, but Bourjois is currently on 3for2.  For a more in depth review of the foundation, click here.  

Out of the three, I find myself reaching for Liz Earle and No7 the most, although that will change when we get to the summer months and my skin darkens in the sun.  I haven't tried Nicola Roberts range, Dainty Doll, which is specially designed for fair women, as it's not easily available near me.

Christmas Gift Guide | £25 and Under

It's that time of the year once again and some of you might be wondering what on earth you're going to buy for your loved ones.  While some may argue that it's easier to buy for girls than boys, all that choice can sometimes be overwhelming.  I've compiled the best gifts for her for £25 and under.  

1. Benefit Sexy Little Stowaway Gift Set - £25; Boots: Benefit is one of my favourite brands but can be a bit pricey when it comes to buying individual products. Incidentally, they always bring out some of the best gift sets and this is no exception. In this set you get 10 of their best selling products, perfect for the make up obsessed girl.

  

2. Ciate Caviar Mini Bar - £20; ASOS: Nail lovers rejoice, Ciate have released a Caviar mini bar which includes some of their caviar beads, as well as polishes that you can wear alone or with the beads.  A great gift for those who like nail art or just enjoy giving themselves a manicure.  

3. iPhone 5 Cases - £24.95; Cath Kidston and Joules: I for one have been waiting for brands to release their iPhone 5 cases since I got mine back in September.  Finally Cath Kidston have released their range just in time for Christmas. If you fancy something different to Cath Kidston, try Joules floral offering. They also have cases with a dog and striped print if she's not so keen on floral prints.  

4. Stila Limited Edition Long Wear Liquid Lip Set - £25; ASOS: Stila always bring out some great sets for Christmas.  This quartet gives you a mixture of nude and bright lip colours to fit any mood.  They also have eyeliner and lip glaze offerings for £25 and under.  

5. Coffee Table Reads: The Lady who was Beautiful Inside (£6) and 50 Shoes that Changed the World (£9); Amazon: I would never say no to a pretty coffee table book. 50 Shoes that Changed the World  is perfect if you can't quite afford Louboutins or Jimmy Choo's.  The Lady who was Beautiful Inside is described as a charming portrait of an amazing woman who turned Winter into Spring. These would also make good stocking fillers.  

6. Lindt Lindor Maxi Ball - £14.99; Ocado: Heaven in a Lindor shaped ball for chocolate lovers, need I say more?  I bought one of these for my Sister-in-law last year and it went down a treat (literally).

Benefit They're Real! Mascara vs. Rimmel London Scandaleyes Show Off Mascara

Please bare with me, I'm currently writing this blog on an app on my iPad, so if anything looks different it's because I'm still getting to grips with the software.

Side note over, lets get back to talking beauty! I was watching TV as you do a few weeks ago, when I spotted an advert for the newest Rimmel London mascara. Now what caught my attention was the mascara wand, it looked vaguely familiar to that of Benefits 'They're Real!' I love They're Real, but I don't always have the extra cash to splurge, so I decided to road test both mascara's and see how similar they were.

Benefit 'They're Real' Mascara; £18.50

It's no secret that this mascara is amazing, it's the best selling mascara in the UK market right now. I've been using it for almost a year now and I'm always pleased with the results it gives. It instantly lengthens and adds volume to create that false lash effect, minus the glue. The brush is synthetic and has a small 'hedgehog' like head which helps you get into all the nooks and crannies of your eyes. The mascara only comes in one colour and its a really dark black, just how I like it to be. I find it quite difficult to seperate my lashes with the wand, which is a pain and can sometimes lead to a clumpier effect.

Rimmel London Scandaleyes Show Off Mascara; £6.99

A fairly new mascara to the market, Scandaleyes Show Off is another great mascara for creating a false lash effect. The brush is noticeably larger and the 'hedgehog' is a lot more prominent. Again the brush is synthetic but I find it a lot more spikey and uncomfortable against the eye but for the effect it gives, this can be overlooked. Just like Benefit, this mascara only comes in black (keeping up the theme of false lashes) but I found that a few coats have to be applied to get the desired result. I really like using the 'hedgehog' along my bottom lashes as I find it grabs them without clumping.

Both mascaras have their pluses and minuses. If your looking for a high end mascara that does it all for you with the swipe of a wand (non magical of course), then Benefit's 'They're Real!' is the product for you. If you're looking for a high street alternative to suit your budget, I highly recommend the Rimmel Scandaleyes Show Off mascara, although you will have to apply a few coats to get the desired effect. I love both mascaras but when it comes down to it, Rimmel wins this time round as I find it better separates my lashes and it doesn't break the bank either!

Today's Face #1

I had an early lecture this morning all about my dissertation (don't even get me started) so I opted for a slightly more minimal make up look with a sheer red lip to pull it all together.  

Benefit The POREfessional - This is my go to primer as of late as it does what it says on the tin as well as mattifies my skin. I'm currently using up a sample as I ran out of the full size product.  For full review, click here.

No7 Essentially Natural Foundation - This is such a great foundation that I picked up at the No7 counter after having my Match Made Service. It's lightweight and have the right amount of coverage and is a great match for my skin. I'll be posting a more in depth review within the next week!

Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer - My holy grail high street concealer which gets rid of any blemish or stubborn redness.  

Collection 2000 Illuminating Touch Concealer - I've been trying this out for the past week and I really like it so far.  It's a dupe of the infamous YSL Touche Eclat but I think it's slightly thicker in consistency.  

Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronze Universel - I've really been into cream products lately and today I opted for bronzer rather than blush.  This is such a luxurious product and it lasts all day on the skin.  

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural - My powder of choice at the moment to set my T-zone.  

Benefit They're Real! Mascara - I LOVE this mascara, it's just so good.  If you want length and volume then this is definitely the mascara for you.  If you haven't got the budget for Benefit, have no fear there will be a blogpost coming soon about a cheaper alternative.  

L'Oreal Rouge Caresse Lipstick in Rebel Red - I got given this in my goody bag when I left More! magazine and I've never worn it. It's a sheer red balmy lipstick (not dissimilar to Revlon's Lip Butters) which is great for any of you who are scared to try a bold, matte red.  It's not that long wearing but it's really comfortable on the lips.  I also think it really brings out the blue in my eyes.  

The look is anything from fancy but it certainly does the job.  I think without the red lip it would work nicely as a very minimal, no make up, make up look.

Benefit's The POREfessional

I love a product that claims to pro-long the length of time make up stays on your face.  After all the effort us girls put in, in the morning to look acceptable, a long wearing primer is a blessing.  I used to use MAC's Prep and Prime everyday and loved the silky smooth texture and how it kept my make up in place, but I have large pores on my cheeks and so when Benefit first launched The POREfessional, I wanted to give it a go.  I love Benefit cosmetics and I find myself using at least one or more of their products everyday. There's been a lot of hit and miss reviews on this product, but so far for me, it's been a hit. 

 Just like my MAC favourite, this primer is silky on the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and ready for my base.  It is a browny colour when you first squeeze it out of the bottle, which was daunting to begin with but it sinks into the skin clear.  I tend to use a pea size amount, which is more than enough to cover my face generously.  It does help with my pores, it doesn't completely eradicate them, but then again the product doesn't claim to do so.  

As for make up staying power, I definitely see a difference when I use this primer.  My foundation is less likely to oxidise or become patchy when I have this layer between my skin and base.  It hasn't broken me out and the formula isn't at all oily which makes it a great product for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin. Although the tube looks small, you get 30ml of product which is the standard amount for foundations.  I've been using the product since January and I've got about one or two applications left.  At £23.50, this is an expensive primer but for me it works.

Benefit Boxed Powder in Hervana

Benefit has been a firm favourite in my make up collection for the past few years. Their packaging is always cute and the products inside are of amazing quality.  My favourite cosmetics by Benefit are definitely their boxed powders (blushers to you and me), of which there are eight to choose from.  My box of choice is their most recent addition to the family, Hervana - a 'good karma' powder set to give you an enlightened flush.  

With fair skin, I often find myself reaching for soft pinks over darker colours that I have in my collection.  I find that the softer colours compliment my complexion better, especially on days when I go for a natural make up look.  Benefit's Hervana has four different colour which swirled together create a gorgeous blush shade, perfect for all skin tones. It has great pigmentation and blends smoothly onto the apple of your cheeks. I like that you can also use the colours seperately, I tend to use the lightest shade as a highlighter for my brow bone, cupids bow and cheekbones.  

 The boxed powders all come with a brush, which I've tried but much prefer using my Real Techniques blush brush. The freebie applicator tends to leave a stripe of colour and is hard to blend with. Theres also a mirror included in the box, great for on the go touch ups.  At £23.50 these are a bit of a splurge for a blusher but I really enjoy using them.

A Spanish Beauty Haul

If you read my Sephora Wish List post (here) you would have known that as well as the blazing sun, I was excited to visit the local Sephora.  I was finally able to get my hands on some long sought after Make Up Forever products, as well as some other bits that had been high on my wish list for a while.  I also visited the duty free shop at Malaga airport too.  I posted a photo on Instagram of my Sephora bag (which, yes, I kept...) and was asked to write up a haul post, so without further adieu.  

SEPHORA

I wasn't in the market for a new primer, even though both my Porefessional and MAC Prep and Prime were running low.  While the make up artists - who by the way were extremely friendly and helpful - were trying to match me up, they used this green primer (shade #1) to neutralise the pink undertones in my skin. I would have said no to it, but they showed one side with and the other without it.  The side without the primer was distinctively orange, not a good look so needless to say I was sold on the primer.  

What I was in the market for however was the MUFE HD Foundation.  I was matched up to shade 117. Something I did notice about MUFE products - their shade numbers are all jumbled, they are not in numerical order from lightest to darkest, which might be something to do with the undertones in the products but it still made it confusing.  I've now used this foundation twice and I like it so far.  I will be reviewing this in a few weeks time to give it a fair trial.  

I also wanted to pick up the MUFE Full Cover concealer after hearing great things about it.  I was matched up to shade 4 (again, shades aren't in numerical order).  I've also used this twice now and on first impressions I think the packaging is great.  It has a long, thin nib which dispenses the product in small amounts, perfect if you hate wasting product because too much has come out of the tube.  

For a very long time, I've wanted to try the infamous YSL Touche Eclat.  I'd saved some euro's specifically to spend in Sephora and decided to finally cave and buy it.  I picked up shade 1 and like the other products, have used it twice now.  I really like it so far - I'm quite freckly after being in the sun everyday and I find it covers up the ones under my eyes perfectly and also illuminates the eye area.  The packaging is so luxurious - gold with a velvet 'Y' shape on the back, definitely an indulgent product.  

I picked up some Yes To Cucumber wipes as I've heard a lot of good things about them.  I find that they remove a lot more than standard wipes from Boots and they aren't that much more expensive. I might stock up on ASOS next time they have a 20% student event or something similar.  

I also managed to get the Sephora Professional Mineral Powder Brush #45.  I have yet to use this, simply because I wanted it clean for this blog post.  Like I mentioned in a previous post, YouTube guru meganisobel raves about this brush for both liquid fondation and also cream product application so I thought I would give it a go.  Because I bought 3+ make up items, I got 40% off of it, which was an added bonus.  

What I love about Sephora, is that they give samples with purchases.  I received a deluxe size Porefessional which was welcomed as my full size is running low and I love the product.  

DUTY FREE

I didn't pick up much in duty free.  I was hoping to get one of the MAC travel sets, but they didn't have any at Malaga airport.  I needed a new bottle of Stella McCartney's 'Stella' perfume, as the one I purchased in the January sales was running low.  They only had the 30ml bottles in the limited edition prints, which I didn't mind as they are beautiful.  

Whilst on the plane out to Spain I spied this Elizabeth Arden kit and decided that if I had some euro's left over on the way back I would buy it.  Miraculously Sephora didn't bankrupt me (although, it was hard not to buy everything) and I bought this kit. Another holy grail product for so many women that I had yet to try. You get the original Eight Hour Cream, the hand treatment and a lip stick which has SPF 15 in it.

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow vs. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua

In my recent monthly favourites post (which you can read here) I mentioned that I had been loving two foundations in particular.  Benefit's Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow and Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua have had me singing 'eenie meenie miney mo' most mornings, but what is the real difference between the two? 

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B10 - £31.00

Chanel's make up always seems to have a lovely, fresh scent to it, which makes application all that luxurious. Vitalumiere Aqua's packaging is different to most of the Chanel foundations, in that it has a twist off lid and you need to squeeze the bottle to get the product out.  It's a light coverage foundation which is buildable depending on the look you're going for, or if you're like me, how you're skin looks that day.  It gives the face a healthy glow and a flawless finish.  The foundation only comes in seven shades which is quite limiting and I even find my B10 to be slightly too dark.  This will change in the summer when I tan but isn't ideal during winter.  The shades are yellow in tone, so great if you have red undertones or hyper pigmentation.  I find that, personally, this foundation doesn't have great lasting power and can go patchy during a long day, even with primer. I love the finish too much not to use it.  

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow in 'I'm Pure 4 Sure' - £24.50

Benefit's long awaited, first liquid foundation had received a lot of hype and greatly deserved I think.  The packaging embodies Benefit's aesthetic, feminine and fun.  The foundation has a pump which makes life a lot easier when it comes to how much you need.  I usually use between 1-2 pumps, again depending on how much skin is looking that day.  Another light coverage foundation with buildability, HFOW (it's A LOT to type out...) comes in nine shades, catering for both yellow and pink undertones.  It claims to be brightening which I agree with, I feel I get a much more dewy finish with this base, compared to Vitalumiere Aqua.  Compared to the Chanel foundation, I feel this stays on my skin a lot longer and I now find myself reaching for it when I have a long day at work or uni ahead of me.  

Both foundations have pro's and con's and are great for different things.  If you're looking for a foundation for an event or occasion that's lightweight and gives your skin that sought after healthy glow - Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua is perfect.  If you're looking for a light coverage foundation to wear to work that brightens your skin to give you a more awake appearence then Benefit HFOW is the choice for you.  Both products contain 30ml of foundation.  If I had to choose between the two right now I would go for Benefit over Chanel - but that could always change!

April 2012 Favourites

Another month gone, where is 2012 going? April was an extremely busy month with the magazine unit due (see the finished product here) and then work experience starting, I haven't really stopped.  When it came to my make up for this month it was quick and simple which is reflected in my favourites.  

For my base I've kept it light and dewy as I haven't really had the time to buff out a heavy duty foundation, plus my skin hasn't really needed that extra coverage. I've switched between my Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow in shade 'I'm pure 4 sure' and my Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B10.  These both give a dewy finish which leaves your skin looking really natural.  My brush of choice is the Sigma F80 flat top kabuki which makes life so much easier! It applies the foundation extremely quickly, leaving a flawless finish. 

To add warmth to my cheeks I've been using the Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronze Universel with my Real Techniques Buffing Brush from the Core Collection.  As I am so fair at the moment, I use the tiniest amount otherwise I might look like an oompa loompa (sorry Roald Dahl, it was never a good look).  I'm looking forward to taking this on holiday and using it when I have a tan! I've also been picking up my Sleek Face Contour Kit and using the highlighter to brighten the inner corners of my eyes as there was a lot of early mornings and late nights through April.  

Keeping with the simple look, I haven't really done anything other than kohl liner on my tight line and mascara.  My mascara of choice is MUFE Smoky Lash in black which I will definitely be stocking up on when I go to Sephora in Spain next month.  For lips I've kept things pretty nude or sheer in colour.  My favourites have been the Clinique Chubby Stick in wooping watermelon and 17 Mirror Shine On Lipstick in Beehive.

New In: High End Purchases

Over the last few weeks I have picked up several products that I have had my eye on for a while.  When I buy a high end product, I like to make sure I actually want it, instead of being impulsive.  Here's what I've picked up!

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation in I'm Pure 4 Sure

When I heard that Benefit were coming out with there first liquid foundation a few months back I knew I wanted to try it. After a trial run I decided to pick up the full size.  Since finding the right skincare routine for me, I've found I don't need, nor like, full coverage foundations so this and my Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua are perfect. This foundation has a good amount of coverage and evens out skin tone, but instead of looking cakey, it leaves a healthy, flawless finish.  

Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronze Universel 

I've been trying to track down this bad boy for at least six months! Since the blogging world went mad for this product, they haven't been able to keep it on the shelves and I was lucky enough to snap up the last one on Monday! I've used it once, and it's gorgeous.  I'm extremely fair so I need hardly any otherwise I might look like a Oompa Loompa.  I'm looking forward to using this more, especially on holiday when I tan.  

Kerastase Ciment Thermique 

I only purchased this yesterday and have yet to use it as it requires washed hair and I've been to the salon today.  I've heard to many great things about this, not only is it a great heat protectant but it helps strengthen the hair follicles - something I definitely need after bleaching and heat damaging my hair.  I'll let you know how I get on with it.

New In: Fashion & Beauty Haul

I've been doing a spot of shopping here and there for the past couple of weeks so thought I'd show you what I picked up.  I always find haul posts a bit long so I've done mine slightly different this time.  If you like the new layout, let me know down below (poet but didn't know it comes to mind...)

1. There comes a time (or maybe more in my case) in a girls life when you stumble upon the most gorgeous bag and pretty much know you need it in your life.  Walking around M&S, of all places, whilst my mum shopped for her holiday, I spied this beauty. It's a medium sized, leather structured bowler bag and is the perfect sized everyday bag.  It was a bit pricey (£79) but I thought it could be an early birthday present to myself.  

2. I've heard only good things about the Tweezerman tweezers and whilst in a lecture, my tutor kept banging on about them and as he's pretty hard to please in general, I thought they must be good. I picked these up at Benefit and were cheaper than any others I've seen.  

3.  A re-purchase of my new favourite concealer - Collection 2000 (soon to be rebranded as COLLECTION) Lasting Perfection in shade fair 1.  It covers a multitude of sins, breakouts, freckles, dark circles and I wouldn't do my make up without it.  Only downfall - the writing on the tube all rubs off after a few uses.  

4. If you're like me, YouTube has become my new TV and the Pixiwoo girls have become a firm favourite channel.  Sam released her own line of brushes called Real Techniques and received rave reviews.  They were quite hard to get hold of in the UK until this month, as they were launched in bigger Boots stores.  I picked up the Powder and Blush brushes as well as the Starter set for eyes.  I haven't used them yet but they are so soft! 

5. I rarely shop in Dorothy Perkins but they were offering 25% student discount so I thought I'd have a wander.  I picked up quite a lot, including this oversized, square cut top.  I live in things like this and it will look great paired with those loafers.

6. I placed my first ever order on Missguided and it came today.  The first thing I picked was these turquoise loafers, which look almost radioactive.  They are going to be great at adding a pop of colour to otherwise dreary outfits.  

7. Another of my Dorothy Perkins picks.  I bought an oversized silver triangle ring and an extremely long necklace with cross pendent.  I needed some silver pieces to go with my Links of London bracelet and hopefully my new watch (see birthday wishlist here).

8.  The main reason I went to Benefit was to get the new blush box in 'Hervana'.  The four colours swirled together are supposed to create a healthy rosy glow on the cheeks.  I'll let you know how I get on.  

9. I picked up another top in Dorothy Perkins, which has aztec print all over it.  Again, it's a baggy number and will get a lot of wear.  I'll either wear this with a plain black bodycon dress and tights or with jeggings.  

10.  My second purchase from Missguided was this leopard print skater dress, which I plan to wear for my birthday.  I was a bit worried it wouldn't fit as I'm top heavy, but it fits like a glove and I really like it.   It came with a black patent skinny belt, but I didn't like it so took it off.  I'll wear black tights, sky high heels, my biker jacket with this and plan to do my make up like this.  Would you like to see an OOTN?

11. While I was in Boots, practically happy dancing over the Real Techniques brushes, I noticed that all the Katy Perry lashes were in stock and I immediately knew I wanted to pick some up.  After the success of the Girls Aloud lashes, Eylure teamed up with Kitty Purry and brought out 5 different lashes.  I picked up Sweetie Pie (pink) for everyday and Oh, Honey! (yellow) for the evening.  

12.  Oh look, no roots! Fresh from the salon today my roots have been bleached up! My hairdresser was pretty surprised that my hair was in "excellent" condition, which I believe I have Macadamia products to thank.  Review coming soon!
