To Fur or Not to Fur?

Recently I have been ploughing though my Friends DVDs, when I came across the episode 'The One with the Yeti'.  Phoebe is given a fur coat made from Minks.   With fur being a key trend with A/W 2010, I began to wonder why people choose fur when there is a much more humane alternative, faux fur.

The 90's saw the launch of the naked anti-fur campaign for PETA, using models and famous faces such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Natalie Imbruglia.  The campaign 'We'd Rather be Naked than Wear Fur' is still going with more recent celebrities taking part such as Making the Band winners Danity Kane (See below)

Another PETA campaign supported by celebrities is this one with Sophie Ellis-Bextor:

So why go for the real thing when it is obvious that animals suffer severe cruelty in the process?  Although faux may not feel the same as real fur, it certainly looks no different.

Catwalks for A/W 2010 established the fact that fur was a trend, but this time with a difference, the fabric they used was in fact faux.  With big players such as Chanel and Miu Miu fronting the trend it will  be interesting to see if real fur will keep its popularity or if faux is here to stay.

Some examples of high street faux fur jackets:

Lipsy; £85

Asos; £95

TopShop; £80
